Recipe Grid

How to read
a recipe sheet

Every recipe in Recipe Grid is one table. This walkthrough takes a real one apart cell by cell, then shows how to write your own. About two minutes, or step through at your own pace.

One recipe. One sheet.

Reading a sheetWriting one

Keep this in your head

The whole method on one card

Top rows

Setup comes first

Full-width rows above the grid are tasks to do before you start: preheat, grease the pan, boil the water.

Left column

Measure everything out

The ingredients are listed in the order you'll use them, amount first, metric in brackets.

One row

A cell beside one ingredient is its prep

Mash, melt, dice, beat. Do it to that ingredient alone.

Hatched cell

Use it as it is

Nothing to do yet. It joins in at the next cell that covers its row.

Tall cell

Combine everything it spans

A cell's height is its contents. Everything in the rows it covers goes into one bowl or pan.

Separate spans

Separate bowls, any order

Cells whose spans don't overlap are independent. Do them in either order, or at the same time.

Reading right

Finish everything to the left

A step can start once every cell to its left, within its span, is done.

Dark column

That's the finished dish

Lost your place? Find the rightmost cell you've finished. The next one to its right is what you do now.
